do you see what i see??

linds...this one is for YOU

you WON'T believe this!

what a weekend! tammy, bonnie and i decided to run off to the beach this weekend. china beach to be exact. it's the beach that the american soldiers were sent to during the Vietnam war for their R&R. we heard it was one of the most beautiful beaches in vietnam, so naturally, we had to check it out!

we arrived in danang on friday night and were off to our "beachfront" hotel. ya right. strike one. we arrived at the gold coast hotel to find that it is most certainly NOT on the beach. sucks, but fine, we can deal. the beach is down the road a km or so. so we check in and go up to our rooms. seconds later we hear a scream from bonnie's room. we run over and there she is chasing a cockroach! we live in vietnam so we can deal with a cockroach or two but don't love them. so bonnie squishes mr. cockroach and we decide we need a drink...or 5. so we sit at the hotel bar and have some gin and tonics....while watching MILLIONS of cockroaches walk the sidewalk in front of us. we decide that maybe this is not what we wanted so in the morning, we would look for a different hotel for satuday night. fine.

we go up to the rooms, walk in and OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is a cockroach ON THE BED!! near the PILLOW!!!! STRIKE 600!! we're out of here!! so we go down stairs and tell the staff that we're leaving and they just can't believe it and think we should stay in a different room because they can "guarantee" there will be no cockroaches in the other rooms...i asked who told the cockroaches to stay out of some rooms and not others..."did you put a do not enter sign on the doors of these rooms?" i ask. we were SO mad! so it's midnight and we're looking for a new hotel. we ended up staying at the Life Resort and it was absolutely AMAZING! we were pretty well the only ones there and the staff was so great. it made up for the crappy roach hotel for sure.

but don't fret. this is not where the story ends. on sunday morning, we get a text message from jetstar saying that our flight has been delayed from 4:45 pm to 12:10 am!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's only a small delay...CRAP! so the great staff helped us get on a vietnam airlines flight early in the afternoon and we were in business class! we had like full out relclining chairs and everything. too bad the flights only an hour long!

so, now i'm back home with a super sun burn. i say in the sun for maybe 20 or 25 minutes on saturday and i am burned to a crisp! OUCH!

aside from the crazy drama, it was a beautiful beach and a nice weekend getaway. sometimes you just need to get out of the city. next weekend we are off to dalat with the staff. the owners of our school are paying for a trip to dalat so we have that to look forward to. anyway, enjoy the china beach pics...it was so nice!!!

art for action

on may 31, our school will be holding the first annual "art for action" art exhibition. it is a project that i started last year at my school in egypt and with the help of the wonderful kathleen and many others, it was a wonderful success. we raised tons of money for the childrens cancer hospital in cairo. so of course, i want to try it here. ill let you know how it goes....

so the reason for this post?? to tell you about my weekend...glue, glue, glue, cut, cut, cut, glue, glue, glue! i have been matting the art that i have so far and it is taking a long time! yeesh! but, the show must go on!

oh and don't worry - i took a break to go get a pedicure and manicure :)

Photo Insanity

i'm a hands-on learner. it has been decided.
i am trying to learn how to use my new camera. i've been reading and practicing, practicing and reading. i am not very good at reading the manual which i know i need to know more about. i get that. but why oh why can't i figure this stuff out?! i can't wait to get home and have enroll in the "matt t. fine art photographers preparatory academy and taxidermy school (accreditation pending)". ok so that might be made up but i need help!

here's the thing, i took a picture today that i like...this is it.

i like that the background is blurry, i like that you can see the bubble mixture flying off the wand (in the bigger version of course)...i don't love all the chaos in the background.

the thing is, why did this picture turn out this way. i meant for it to turn out this way but i tried the same stuff with a bunch of other shots and this is one of the only ones that turned out the way it was planned. you know what i mean? some of the others, from the same position, same settings, didn't have the blurry background. why? bah!

anyway, that's my picture vent of the day. back out there tomorrow....i will figure this out sooner or later!

if you could see us now...

We have safely arrived in the nations capital city, Hanoi, and after a very expensive taxi ride, we have arrived at our hotel. it's on a busy little street in the city centre but once inside, it's another world. all of the furniture is made of wood. pine i think kelly said. and it's so cute and quaint like a little cottage. but our room has two features that i MUST mention, both of which are being utilized right now. as we "speak" Tammy is in the WOODEN, yes WOODEN bath tub. i've never seem something like this before. it's so strange. and of course i love the "rain" shower head that accompanies it. the other very exciting feature is the huge toshiba flat screen tv which is connected to the computer on which i am typing at this second. my eyes are kinda sore from sitting this close to the screen actually. it's so cool!! i think i'm in love! as soon as tammy is out of the wooden bath tub, we're going to watch glee (which i brought on my memory stick) while laying in bed in our cute little cottage hideaway. goodnight moon!

a little piece of "home"

we have heard talk of this lebanese restaurant in district one (downtown saigon) and kelly has been dying to check it out. well, tonight he got his chance and it made me a little "home" sick! for egypt!! it's in a quiet little back alley, the writing on the sign is in arabic, there is ramadan cloth everywhere, and the smell of apple sheesha lingers in the air.

we ate all kinds of food that reminded me of egypt, drank lemon mint juice, sat on low cushioned benches and finished the night off with a little sheesha. makes me think of all the little things that i do miss about egypt. and of course, all of the egypt gang was there and we reminisced about the "good old days".

a nice night! now if only we could have started out on a felluca....

how to feel lazy 101

live with kelly while he trains for a triathalon and a marathon. please see below for details.
  • i walked home from school yesterday (about the only active thing i did all day) to find that kelly was still at the gym. put on my pj's, began to blog about healing the wounded heart.
  • kelly came home from his 1.5 hours at the gym. i was blogging. we made dinner together. we ate dinner.
  • kelly went to lotte mart shopping. he needed shirts for running. and stuff to make cookies with his class. i watched "life inturupted" - my newest television show.
  • kelly came home from lotte mart. i got ready for bed.
  • kelly went swimming. i went to bed at 8:30. and watched "brothers and sisters".
if that doesn't make you feel lazy, i don't know what will!!

the simple things

so you know how there are just those little things that make you laugh or smile? simple, silly little things that brighten your day. my friend S once shared her "simple joy" with me and to this day i remember how much we laughed in that moment. you know the pilsbury rolls that you pull and as it unwraps around the roll, all of a sudden it POPS! well that's her little moment. it's nothing special to many people but we even got the camera out to try and capture the look on her face at that second.

well today, i made banana muffins. only a few people have witnessed the banana muffin making process but my "simple joy" is definitely a part of this process. so today, as a peeled the frozen bananas and they PLOPPED out of their skin and into the bowl, i laughed out loud thinking of how many times that simple act has made me laugh.

i feel like this is the point where my dad would say "simple things amuse simple minds!" but it's so funny! you will have to try it for yourself to experience the simple joy! there are people out there who will vouch for me, i know it!

my stars

so i was sitting here thinking about some of my friends. i was thinking that the mix of people that come and go in our lives is so strange but obviously they have been sent to us for a reason. i have so many wonderful friends and i am truly thankful for that. for all of them. friends on different levels. friends for different reasons. friends for a long time or a short time. the trouble is that in this international lifestyle that i have chosen, friends come and go a lot more than i would like them to. it makes me think of that quote about having all the people we love in the same place at the same time. and its true. i wish i could have you all here. all together. being friends.

anyway, so i went to look for an image to put on this post and this one came up. how perfect is it?! it's exactly what i wanted and needed in this moment. my friends are really important to me and even though i sometimes don't stay in touch as much as i should, i want to tell you that i think of you more than you know.

now this got me thinking. when you hear the word friend, what comes to mind? i think of the friends that i cherish and hold dear to my heart. i think of "friends". that i thought were friends, but it wasn't quite so. then of course, there's the tv show. friends. what about you? what do you think of when you hear the word FRIEND?!

"and i'm going to miss you like a child misses their blanket..."

well, as you know, sean and christa were here for a visit, what you don't know is that i tried to kid nap them so that they couldn't leave but it didn't work :(. i really stand by my earlier statement that when i have visitors, i should get to decide when they leave! but for some reason, no one is following my new rule. apparently sean has this OPP thing to get back to and then has a trip planned across canada and the states. who would choose that over being here with me?! and then there's christa. something about that rock (newfoundland) that she lives on i tell ya...once you leave there, apparently it is not so easy to get back! she tried to change her flight but then she wouldn't have been able to get back home until the end of april! seriously newfies, let's work on this! the good news is that i will be home for about 7 weeks in the summer and christa has planned to come visit. i had mentioned to sean that he should come visit too and as we were saying goodbye and i was crying, he said he would come to wawa this summer. therefore, i will make sure he stays true to that little promise :).

so, how about some highlights of our time together?!
  • me, kel, c and sean all in my bed, having story time. definitely good for a laugh!
  • on sean's last night, we had a "fruit platter" picnic in the courtyard at our apartment. it included pomello, dragon fruit, star fruit, mango, asian pears and the ever stinking durian. the first bunch of fruits were fine....the durian was so smelly!!! even outside. kelly claimed to like the smell up close. and kel and sean both claimed to like the first bite of durian. i think it was when they went back for seconds that they both decided their time with the durian was over.

  • dinners and drinks at the tavern. our local "watering hole" if you will. sharing stories and drinks with old friend and school friends. lots of laughs.
  • our trip to hoi an of course, which you have already read about.
  • our trip to hue with christa which you will read more about soon.
  • my afternoon of girl time with christa. we went shopping at Ben Than market and the Tax Centre, then had manicures, pedicures, and had our hair washed, blow dried and straightened! (all for the low, low price of about $20!)

of course, these are only the highlights and all the time that we had together, although it wasn't enough, was great! i'm probably forgetting some funny stories but you'll have to forgive me, it's late (almost 9 pm!) and i'm still trying to catch up on my sleep!
anyway, the thing is, i am so glad that my two super, fantastic friends were able to come to vietnam and share in the craziness with us. it's a really great place and i want others to experience it with us. it's strange because you never know how people from your "home life" will fit in to your "away life" but it was great. i was so happy that they were happy. sean said that on a scale of 1 to 10, egypt was a 6.5 and vietnam was a 9.9! so if that doesn't make you want to come and visit, i don't know what will!

Cairo Time

today tammy and i watched "Cairo Time", written and produced by Ruba Nadda. it had been recommended to us by Simon and Kathleen and after searching and searching, i was finally able to find it. anyway, the moral of the story is - you should watch cairo time too. expecially if you have lived there, travelled there, or know someone who has. parts of it were so true to what cairo is really like that we laughed out loud. parts of it we were shocked that they chose to bring up, like how some men treat foreign women. parts of it made cairo look really beautiful and more calm than it actually is. but truly, a good watch and i think it even made me a little "homesick" for egypt. anyway, give it a try. see what you think.

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

after explaining a complaint free world to you yesterday, i feel like this blog is poorly timed. but as i rethink that, i have decided that none of this is complaining, it's merely stating the facts. i am not complaining, just telling you facts about my feelings. please see below:

fact: i don't want sean to leave tomorrow.

fact: i don't want christa to leave next wednesday.

fact: i am going to be really sad when they leave.

fact: having guests from home is really fun and once they come, i should be able to decide when they leave.

fact: christa should move to vietnam to teach.

fact: sean should cancel his road trip, call in sick for his next shifts and stay here extra long.

fact: i don't know when i will see sean next and that is also sad.

fact: christa is supposed to come to wawa this summer...sean should come too! yup.

ok well i think you know how i feel now. just facts, not complaints.

p.s. this reminds me of something that happened last year and lindsay had a really good idea. "hey sean and christa. let's play hide and seek. you go hide. i'll find you!"
(what they don't know is i am going to find them AFTER their scheduled flights. shhhh......)

Random Thoughts...

  • Sean and Christa arrive in less than 48 hours. That's right - we're down to hours, not days! So excited to see them and it's going to be like Christmas when they arrive cause we've asked for so much stuff from home!
  • I just finished writing my article for the newspaper from back home. I'll post the link when it's available.
  • Lindsay and Phil got engaged! and two weeks ago Kathleen and Simon got engaged! Seems that love is in the air! Blow some of that air my way... ;)
  • The Japanese dollar store - which I love - let me down tonight. I wanted something for my class, I had seen it there before, and tonight it was all gone. Why dollar store, why?! I always spoke so nicely of the dollar store!
  • We are going to Hoi An this weekend. The "tailored clothing" capital of Vietnam. I should be looking in magazines and picking out stuff to get made....maybe I'll go do that now.
  • Tonight we watched an episode of "The Rules of Engagement". It's hilarious. If you haven't seen it, you should watch an episode. So funny!!
  • This Friday we have student led conferences with our SK kids for the first time. I'm sure they will do fine but we have a lot of work to do before then and I feel like there is never enough time! This week we are studying Australia and Korea and will go for a field trip to do Tae Kwon Do. There is no time to prepare for meetings with all this fun happening!
  • We have a week long holiday in May and haven't decided where to go yet. Suggestions welcome!
All of this running through my brain. Maybe I'll just go to bed and ignore it all for now. I love my bed! Goodnight!

Aperture, ISO, shutter speed - oh my!

So along with my new blogging obsession, I have decided that I want to learn more about my camera (finally). I know...it's about time! I've been reading and reading online and looking to friends for information, guidance and inspiration. I have found an amazing website, through the blogging world which has a really "normal" "technologically impaired" way of explaining the functions on a camera and when and how to use each one. I have been "creeping" through photos that my friend have posted on facebook, and found that I have some very talented friends. I have been taking pictures of my class because I figure they are my best subjects, but today I was so disappointed with the results! Boo! I have alot to learn!! Tomorrow I will try again. New settings, new plans, same cute faces. Why do I get these obsessions?
Anyway, I want to share with you the amazing website that I found. It is http://www.thepioneerwoman.com/ You will love it I promise!
I asked my friend Matt if it was okay for me to write about him in this blog because he has always been supportive when it comes to photography but has also been encouraging me for a long time to get a better camera or at least learn more about my own. Don't get me wrong, it's a fine camera but I tend to use it on the dreaded AUTO setting. *cringe* Anyway, back to why I want to write about Matt. He's taken on a new project. He says he's been putting it off for a while because of "fear of commitment" but has recently made the big leap. Matt is challenging himself to take a picture a day for an entire year. It challenges him to use his camera everyday and to find something that he feels is photo-worthy. I think that it is such a cool idea and I have to admit I have been frequenting his flickr page to check for updates! I love to look at what has sparked his interest that day. I like to look at the picture and try to figure out what techniques he was using. I also like to flip through Matt's flickr page and look at photos he has taken and what settings he had his camera on to get the shot to look just so. And in my opinion, he is a fantastic photographer. My brain just won't stop thinking photography!

Here is the address for Matt's 365 set. Check it out! Maybe you'll be inspired too! (See photo above - one of my faves from this set).

I don't think I am ready for the commitment yet...someday I will be and I will be sure to share. Thanks Matt for sharing! And all you photographers out there - let's see what you've got!
