when all else fails..

today was a rough day for me.
kind of wonk and all flustery and fidgety, which in my world only means only one thing. and only bestie jen knows what to do: offer me the floor of her living room for the fetal position while feeding me toast and apple juice.

so when i got home from work, while i had 16 other, more important things to do, i marched upstairs and got started on a really big project:

organizing the creative room.

organizing is a perfect project for days like this because it never ends.
painting my nails gives me something to do for 20 minutes.
watching the bachelor: 2 hours.
cleaning closets, organizing yarn, stringing string, uncovering envelopes from stashes of 83 previous showers i've thrown, juggling styrofoam balls of all sizes, and sifting through bins and bins {and bins} of spools of ribbon: 5 hours and there's still more to do.

and then the time it takes to take really crappy photos with my phone...

before, before, half way before.

paints + string, the devil's gift bag filler, white things.

pens + pencils, garland yet to be strung, string.

ribbon scraps, hand dyed baker's twine, yarn.

 see, crappy photos, right?

someday soon there will be a sewing machine on the table.
{mom, where is that sewing machine? help.}
and a chair. i need a chair.
the bulletin board will soon be filled with clever ideas and sweet things.

but the floor is 100% clean {trust me on this}
and the closet is almost there. all that remains is wrapping paper and scrapbook paper.

so thank you wonk day.
i accomplished so much because of you.

p.s. how many days can go by before it's too late to blog about the golden globes? can i push it out another day? i even took notes...

friday-ness. {a tragic love story.}

1.  i'm 25 days away from a new phone.
the android/iphone devil/angel situation currently residing on my shoulders is no secret.  i honestly have a pro-con list scribbled beside my bed. the list is a mile long and the scores are in a dead even split.

iphone: the camera! the phone covers! {seriously}.
android: everything else!

i've been scouring the internets for reviews + comparisons. serious geekiness.
the only thing left to do is pray it out.

that being said, i found out on twitterville that there's this january photo a day thing happening on that one exclusive iphoneappstagram and i'm missing out.

i'm playing along anyway.

#janphotoaday
what i wore: at the end of the day.
makes me smile: lunch, with a side of pizza.

2.  i'm addicted to projects.
the creative room is a disaster at the moment, but shelves are being cut {and painted?} this weekend and then the organization can begin.

the other door in the stripped-and-stained door project awaits a man. the stained glass - half of them broken - means i need help hoisting the door up on the saw horses to clean it, caulk the loose glass tiles, and paint the door. there are just some projects that miss independent can't do alone. so, we're on hold right there with that project.

someday, the finished doors will go side by side and make a really tall headboard.
... someday.

so i've moved onto the kitchen/dining room. a room that's remained untouched since, like, 2007 when i painted the kitchen pea soup green on a whim.

my most current white girl problem?
too many pretty cookbooks and nowhere to display them.

so today i went to office max and for $7.99, i'm going to do this.

except i'm going to float my cookbooks inside an over sized empty purple frame.

{my most recent favorite cookbook? the one i've tried to give away three separate times... but kept it all three times: homemade.}

3.  i wore my first pair of jeggings today.
i felt like it was a glimmer of what life might be like in pajama jeans and i never want to take them off.
it's a sweet front for wearing stretchy pants to work, essentially.

4.  i volunteered to help jordan ferney at alt summit.
but she emailed me today to tell me her sponsors backed out and her party was cancelled so she didn't need my help.

that would have been awesome.

5. i need a head shot.
 for work.

dreeeeaaad.

6.  i spent the last two days in a conference room analyzing travel patterns and north-south traffic flow in the salt lake valley.

i also spent the last two days across from a well dressed single? mormon? local? engineer? who thought i was funny. {because, in a room of engineers, i am funny.}
ohhhhh the lengths crafty single girls {who, me?} will go to uncover the very important vital statistics of men without wedding rings. never underestimate a girl's ability to find things out.

even going so far as to google "does burger king serve hot chocolate?"
that was going to answer my "is he mormon" question...
and a bk breakfast? i mean, i guess i couldn't judge if he was a business traveler.

i was going to get to the bottom of this. if he was marriage-able, i wanted to know.
after all, there are 100 engineers in my realm who wish for my most immediate eternal happiness. if there is potential out there, i can't deny them the opportunity to execute.

for as long as he would laugh and repeat the funny things i said, would roll his eyes in my direction and whispered something witty when the other guys were showing off with their genius ideas, and other general male games... for as long as those things were happening, i was going to work with it.

until half way through day two.... when, during the back and forth small talk over swedish fish + trail mix, i asked him a question that i knew would give me some telling answers... and the words "my wife..." fell out of his mouth.

and i fell on the floor.

i'm shaking my fist at you, the wedding ring-less easy conversationalist business traveler!
shaking!

back to the drawing board.

make + create.

i'm feeling very much like i can do anything today....

because i did this very cool thing in my guest room turned office/craft room yesterday.
i nailed 200 nails in my wall and made art!
big... BIG.. art.
we're talking arial font, size 800

 cooooooool, huh?
now... i'm a crafty person... i do projects around the house without so much as a shine of my nails on my lapel... but i was practically doing back flips through every turn of this project BECAUSE IT IS SO RAD.

maybe it's the exactness of the yarn, who knows - but my inner queen of precision dances every time i look at it.

here's how it worked:

1.  i found this on pinterest - or was it on design mom first?  i don't know...

2. i brainstormed the message i might want to display in the room {i don't like calling it a craft room.  can i call it the creative room instead?}.  make + create was the first thing that came to mind, but i printed the entire alphabet just in case. just as the tutorial states, choose a really simple font.  no serifs. i went super safe with arial. to make the formatting as easy as possible, i turned to my handy-dandy powerpoint - the place where i do all of my design work.  it's like adobe-for-dummies and i swear i can do anything in that program.  set up the page to fit an 8.5" x 11" sheet, portrait.  insert a text box and center it on the page. beginning with the A, i formatted it appropriately.  in my case, arial size 800.  duplicate slide 25 more times and replace the letter on the page with the rest of the alphabet... or whatever message you'll be displaying.

3.  using a level and painter's tape, create a straight line. trim the white space from each letter, leaving about 1/2" around the page. position your letters and attach with painters tape. avoid taping over the letter - the E was a little tricky... not much white space on any edge! use the bottom of the letters as a guide against the painters tape. if you look carefully, my T is off a smidge. kills me.

4.  check, check, triple check.

5.  pound nails into your wall like a mad woman.  i used 2" 6d {big} nails. i went through a box and a half of nails. you'll use more than you think. i think there are 26 nails in the M alone.  geesh.  i began in the upper left corner of each letter, hitting the angles/corners first, then filling in the space between as i saw fit. straight lines don't neeeeed the extra nails, it just looks more fitting i think. in order to achieve a rounded look along the curves of some of the letters, be more generous with your nails. the inside C, for example, was in nail heaven.

{if you care to, measure and mark each nail with a line to indicate when to stop pounding so they're all even. i didn't do that.... blame it on my good eye.}

6. tie a knot around a nail - on an corner, maybe - and start winding your yarn, pulling it taut and as close to the wall as possible. with each loop around the track {i stopped counting, but i think i went around 6 or 7 times}, scootch your yard that much closer to the nail head. it's okay if it crosses your previous layer of yarn. perfection, schmerfection. another knot will tie it off.  trim the extra strand of yarn at your knots.

7.  when you're all done - or when you're antsy enough to want to peek at your final product, carefully remove the paper behind the yarn. i tore at it, ripping around the nail holes.  you may have to adjust the yarn back into place.  after a few rounds of this, i was comfortable enough to remove the paper before i wound the yarn around my nails.  fair warning, though, with out the print out of the letter behind it, it really does look like a jumble of nail heads. be sure/confident you're winding the yarn around the right place.

8.  stand back and do a cartwheel... you're equal parts genius, crafty, and lumberjack.

go ahead.  copy me. pin this. and then tell me how talented i am. with enough compliments and fanfare, i'll let you in for an afternoon of shared crafting in my new posh {almost} space - a prized opportunity indeed!

two spaces that are too good to go unmentioned:

i think when i get to heaven, i'll be granted an eternity to peruse pinterest, shop for one of a kinds, decorate a room, peruse pinterest some more, re-shop, and redecorate. all without budgetary constraints.
because there's just tooooo much goodness out there to just sit back and let pass by my eyeballs without doing something about.

... this week alone!

liiiiike,

1.  bohemian preppy, spied on design mom + apartment therapy
p.s. i took these pictures right off those sites. thaaaanks d.m. and a.t.

next time i start a new project, ask me if it's going to get me to this place.
because this is the place i love.

the place where there's just a little too much to look at... but it all fits.
and there's handmade-ness all over.
with one of a kinds.
lots of color.
not everything is taken seriously.
and it's comfortable.

the same can be said for
2.  emily henderson's eclectic artsy oddessy room.

colorful... quality color. not cheap color.
originals and handmades.
comfortable pieces.
but daring at the same time.
and wallpaper on the ceiling!!!

if i could start all over in my house, i would. and i'd start right here.

camomile hixon.

speaking of my dvr, i watched an episode of home by novogratz tonight that featured a masssssive piece of art by camomile hixon- the queen of glitter, apparently.

how AWESOME would it be to have a statement piece shine like this in your house?

makes me think i could do this....

i guess i've got art on the brain.

project de jour.

genius idea from alisa burke.

canvas + shoe polish in hand... i'm doing this.
mine will read:

the heights by great men reached and kept
were not attained by sudden flight,
but they, while their companions slept,
were toiling upward in the night.
-henry wadsworth longfellow

or maybe just

- dr. suess

regardless, tonight, i'm putting on my painting clothes and getting my hands dirty.

more amazing wall designs from honestly wtf
wall paint, sharpies, and kids art....
geesh. it kills me.

i have wallpaper envy.

i had the most indecisive time choosing wallpaper last year
{it started here, went there for a sec, and finally landed here.}

no regrets..... but maybe, after seeing flat vernacular's work i'm tempted to wallpaper something else in my house.
or just start collecting stickers.

i want this one so so so so so so SO bad.

sweet ribbon.

yes, those are eyeballs.

peacock feathers

piggies!

they call this one "stuff" - which i think is perfectly appropriate.

now.
THESE ARE STICKERS!  like the ones we used to collect in our childhood.
i'd buy them at rite-aid or thrifty in the party invitation and gift wrap aisle for way too much.
and then use them sparingly... for only the most precious of occassions like letters to my bestie or decorating my notebook.  important stuff.

don't mind the load of pictures here... but i think you need to see it at every depth to see how aaaamazing it really is.

while some of you - cydney? - might think it's a little much, i think it's fab!
but high dolla, for sure.

she does framed work too.
but of course, that makes me think...... i could totally make that.

ohhhhhhhhh i'm envious.  i want those walls.
