today my little brother brett turns 25.
maybe.
it might have been yesterday.
it's the focus of a great bennion family debate.
we celebrated his birthday on january 23 all the way up until he registered for the 7th grade.
until we {my mom} started to gather all those things required to get started at a new school - immunization records, the cable bill for proof of address, etc. we pulled his birth certificate out of the grey box. the grey box is the suitcase my dad packed around mexico in the mid 70s when he was a church missionary and houses everything valuable to the bennion family. both the important and sentimental things go in the grey box. vital statistic info and my student of the month certificate from 2nd grade. things like that.
out came the birth certificate.... "brett bennion, born this day, yada yada yada."
dated january 22.
a whole day early from the birthday we'd been celebrating for 12 years!
my mom insisted. no, not just insisted - to this day, she'll lay her life on the line to claim he was born on january 23.
ask an 18 day overdue mother with 4 children 10 years old and younger - my brother was born on the 23rd.
but this is a world of records, paperwork and order..... and legally, brett's gotta live his life like he was born on the 22nd of january.
the day this whole thing unraveled, my sweet 12 year old brother exclaimed, "i'm two days older than i was yesterday!" score for a 12 year old.
so i wished him a happy birthday yesterday. with a question mark.
and i'll seal it today with another greeting, this time with an exclamation point.
that lucky dog.... of all the bennions to get two birthdays.... it's not me.
